Letchworth’s and districts Organic Gardening Group Spring Event

On Saturday April 27th, LOG ( formerly GIYO) held its 4th annual fundraising Spring event at the Free Church Hall in Letchworth. As on previous occasions the cafe kitchen did a spendid job and our Growers market plant stall had a huge array of edible plants for sale. The Hitchin branch of Friends of the Earth had a stall explaining what they are currently doing . This year we missed the LDGA stall which is always a great display, as they were busy doing other things.
Our speaker was Geoff Hodge, broadcaster and author, speaking about pests and diseases. He asked the audience how many were organic gardeners and the small show of hands showed that we had a lot of new people there who are not currently members of our group. That is a good thing. maybe they will be inspired to try. I think most of us learned something new if only that black plastic sheeting doesn’t warm the soil like clear plastic. (As we are trying to use less plastic in the garden that knowledge is of limited value!).
The raffle seemed to grow and grow so it took ages to call out all the prizes! A big thank you to the whole team who pulled out all the stops to make this another successful event, and to those who contributed cakes, plants and raffle prizes. We couldn’t do it without you. Your efforts meant that we were able to send a donation of £80 to Garden Organic for their fighting fund (fighting for environmental justice mainly e.g. laws concerning pesticides such as ‘Roundup’) and that was after we had paid all other expenses.
There are other treats in store for our group throughout the year which will be advertised through the TTL diary and bulletin.
