Who Are We?
Letchworth Cyclists are a group of active local cyclists, with representatives from the town’s cycling groups, who are working towards making Letchworth an exemplar ‘cycling town’.
For Letchworth to have a cycle network suitable for cyclists from the age of 8 upwards, so that an increasing proportion of Letchworth residents choose to use the bicycle to make journey’s within the town and to neighbouring towns.
What we have done so far?
We have conducted a Cycle Survey (Survey Results) to find out where improvements could be made to make cycling a more attractive option and have produced a plan for a continuous network of safe cycling routes throughout the town (LetchworthCyclePlanEdition1).
We have been working in partnership with North Hertfordshire District Council Communities Team to utilise sustainable transport funds to increase cycle and scooter parking at community venues across the town. Scooter racks, bike racks and bike shelters have been installed at seven schools, the guide hall, a scout hut, a local church, the leisure centre, the town centre and at four groups of flats where there is high cycle utilisation. The project has supported increased cycling through the provision of 348 additional bike parking places and 185 scooter parking places across the town.
Next Steps / Current Projects
- Heritage Cycle Trail.
We are working with the Heritage Foundation to produce a heritage cycle trail
- Improving Access Paths For Cyclists Into Local Schools
We are in the process of submitting a funding bid to pilot a Sustrans community based approach, using their modular Street Kit, to find solutions that will encourage more students and staff to cycle to local schools.
- Extending Our Cycle Network Plan
We will continually review our draft network plan when new feedback is received and will look to extend the plan to cover links to neighbouring towns.
- Responding To and Influencing Local Planning Authorities
Hertfordshire’s recently published Local Transport Plan contains a Transport Hierarchy which should deliver a modal shift towards sustainable transport which we fully support. Supporting documents to this strategy are currently being developed, including the Active Travel Strategy and the North East Growth and Transport Plan, we will be looking for opportunities to influence these documents so that they will help to deliver a ‘Space for Cycling’. Letchworth Heritage Foundation are currently developing their own Cycling Strategy, which we are seeking to influence by challenging the Foundation to be more ambitious for cyclists and planning for cycling to be the transport option for work and school trips, not just a leisure pursuit.

Maintenance of Letchworth’s Cycle Network
To help improve the quality of roads, paths and cycle tracks in Letchworth you can report any problems, including encroaching vegetation, to Hertfordshire County Council Maintenance team.
We promote evening courses in bicycle maintenance. The courses, which takes place at St.Paul’s Church Hall, Pixmore way, Letchworth, runs for five weekly sessions (7:30pm-9:00pm) and costs £15 to £20 depending on the number of attendees.
The cycle maintenance course for non-electric machines covers fault finding, adjustments, basic maintenance, repairs, and get you home needs. Participants need to bring their bicycles with them as there is lots of practical work involved. The course is tutored by Frank, who is keen to get as many cyclists on the road as possible. In his spare time he also helps Sustrans, which is the charity which is creating the British national network of cycleways, including Letchworth’s very own Route no.12. Please contact us and we’ll put you in touch with the course co-ordinator.
